Kathryn Smith received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Western Kentucky University. She majored in math at the second- ary level and elementary education. After teaching thirty years in public school education grades K-10, she joined Western Kentucky University faculty. She has spent the last eighteen years working with teacher candidates in math education. She served on statewide reform initiatives. Her team of four teachers received one of eight statewide grants through which her classroom served as a model classroom for best practices. Her philosophy of math education is that students should be actively engaged in problem solving experiences which are standards based, relevant, rigorous, and involve critical thinking skills. She hopes to instill this same belief in young teachers with whom she shares their educational journey.
